Packing With Llamas Ideas

We were forwarded a short e-mail conversation between two llama packers. We thought some of their ideas were great ones so we’d like to pass them on to you so you can start plans for your own pack trip!

If you are a naturalist and want your binoculars and all your field guides along, or a photographer and have a case of fancy cameras and lenses, or there are musicians on the trip who want to do some jamming at camp, or you collect rocks, then you may well want one or two llamas in addition to the one that carries your camping gear. That’s what I love about packing with llamas – there are all sorts of possibilities that are out of the question with backpacking.

I agree. We take five llamas on our month-long trip in August, to support two people and a dog. This allows us to go the distance &usually 26-29 days, 300 miles) without having to arrange a resupply.

No llama starts out overloaded, and if we need to lighten the load of one llama who isn’t doing well, we have the space and weight capacity available on the others. We have room for a sizy tent and plenty of first aid supplies. We can carry a few tools to do trail work that needs doing. As the days pass and the food gets consumed, we have room to pack out any trash we find in the backcountry. I can take a backpacker guitar and a few paperbacks to read in the evening.

Happy packing!!!
