INTERNATIONAL LAMA REGISTRY DIRECTORS APPROVE
INTERIM DOMESTIC SCREENING BEGINNING JANUARY 2008

January 29, 2003, the ILR Board of Directors passed a motion that stated,“beginning February 1, 2003, there will be a moratorium on the registration of any animals without two registered ILR parents.” Since that time the ILR BOD has been working on policy that would protect the integrity of the Registry while allowing for limited screening of animals into the ILR. At the recent face-to-face meeting in Kalispell the directors voted unanimously to allow the screening of DOMESTIC llamas, i.e., llamas presently residing in North America. This interim policy will begin January 1, 2008, and will be in effect until January 1, 2010. The Registry welcomes input on this ruling from members and llama owners. The following policies for screening will apply:

Llamas presented for domestic screening must be at least two years old.

A screening application must be completed and the application and a non-refundable fee of $250.00 per animal must be received to begin the screening process.

An ILR approved veterinarian with extensive camelid experience will complete the medical and physical form for each animal.

The animal must be microchipped and have a DNA analysis on file.

The ILR Registrar and Board of Directors will examine the llama for phenotype based on a set of 12 photos. Animals exhibiting cross-bred phenotype will be placed in the appropriate division of the cross breed registry.

The ILR Board of Directors intend this interim ruling to be a vehicle for non-registered animals or animals whose registrations have been lost through undocumented transfers to come into the database. The office will have a full instructional sheet prepared before the end of the year to help owners follow the instructions in a step-by-step manner to facilitate the screening process.

The moratorium for llamas not currently residing in North America has been extended and will remain in effect until January 1, 2010.

FTA CARD PROCEDURE CHANGE

FTA CARD PROCEDURE CHANGE

In the past, we have included an FTA card at no charge with the registration certificate for each newly registered llama with the intent of encouraging llama owners to use the card to store a blood sample from their llama in case it is ever needed. However, the low rate of return of those cards did not justify the expense and we have changed that policy.

As some of you are already aware, we no longer automatically send out an FTA card with the registration certificate for each newly registered llama. We will continue to provide free FTA cards but only if the FTA cards are requested by the owner at the time of registration. With this new procedure, we will continue to get FTA cards into the hands of those owners who plan to use them and save the ILR the expense of providing cards to those owners who do not plan to use them.

If you order FTA cards separate from the registration process, there will be a charge of $3.00 per card or $25 for 10 cards to cover expenses.

Reminder: PHOTO REQUIREMENTS

REMINDER about your photos. In order to scan your photos for archival purposes, we need you to adhere to the following requirements:

> 2 full body color photos (left and right)

> 3 ½” x 5” or 4” x 6” size

> No other animals in the photo

> Llama’s name, owner name, owner code printed on back of each photo

> Digital photos mailed to the office are acceptable if 1) printed on lab quality photo paper and they are 2) an acceptable size and 3) color quality (e.g., pink, purple, and yellow llamas will not be accepted J ) (there is a $5 charge if we need to back them on heavier paper)

> No instant or Polaroid photos

> DO NOT CUT THE PHOTOS SMALLER THAN THE REQUIRED SIZE. Our SCANNERS (both person and machine) get grumpy if you do
