Developing Character, Responsibility, and Confidence
Llamas and alpacas make wonderful youth projects. They have a calm demeanor and are easily trained. They are easy to care for, and help to teach young people responsibility. Unlike many agricultural projects, the purchase of llama or alpaca grow with a child 10 years or more, as opposed to many livestock projects where new animals need to be acquired each year.
Camelid projects offer a variety of activities and competitions. Youth classes include showmanship, obstacle courses, costume classes, and much more. Outside the show ring llamas are used for packing, driving, therapy, and public relations. Llamas and alpacas can also be terrific breeding programs for young people drawn to agriculture, with competitions related to halter and fleece being open to young exhibitors as well.

Youth Champions and Reserve Champions are typically awarded in each age division at each show.
The Certificate of Achievement, Certificate of Excellence, and Championship Award are available to youth exhibitors.
The Universal Awards Program Top 10 is calculated at the end of the year, for Performance and Showmanship in each age division.

The age division in which the youth will show is determined by their age on January 1st of that year. If a youth reaches the age of 7 any time during the year, they become eligible to show in the Junior division as of their birthday.
Junior Division - 7 through 11 years old
Intermediate Division - 12 through 14 years old
Senior Division - 15 through 19 years old
